Switching to Natural Deodorants

As part of my daily routine cleanse, I (impulsively of course) bought this new deodorant I saw in Free People from Kaia Naturals called The Takesumi Detox. When I first saw it I was like wtf detox for your armpits but slowly cozied up to the idea. Its hard for me to say but I have been struggling with underarm pigmentation and would do nearly anything to make it better. Lemons don't really work for me. I've tried other natural deodorants such as the crystal rock kind, Schmidt's Deodorant pot (it was too inconvenient in the winter when it solidifies), and the spray-on crystal deodorant. Those, apart from the Schmidt's, have worked moderately well for me albeit not as heavy duty as conventional deodorants.

I have to be honest with you. This whole thing was 90% because of curiosity. I just wanted to know if there are any other deodorants that work better than those I've tried. According to Kaia Naturals' website, there is a 'purging process' that you will need to go through. It just means that you will stink for a whole week. I'm not sure how bad I'll stank but apologies to the people around me if it was that bad. If you are uncomfortable reading me talk about my pits, click away! I'm doing this for science and I'm sure there are some out there who would like to know my detox journey.

The detox process

The detox process

Here I will be recording week by week my experience with the deodorant and my purging process and sharing it with you.

Week 1

First few days I've had little to no problem. I did reapply before I went to work but that is because I know I will sweat. I didn't really smell per-se but if I do get in there and take a close sniff, I could smell a little bit of odour coming through. I'm liking the Juicy Bamboo scent a lot. I was afraid I might smell like cat pee (citrus scents + BO = cat pee?) but so far the scent was quite subtle so it wasn't unpleasant at all. The Cold-Pressed Rose however I could not say the same for. For some reason it ended up smelling like a certain... manly secretion... if you know what I mean. While the idea of having rose-scented pits was very intriguing, I think I'm going to stick with the citrusy one for the time being.

Update: I've got the case of the smellier left pit this morning. I only used it once the whole day yesterday instead of reapplying it before bed.

Update 2: Stinky left pit confirmed. Right pit remains fresh and unscented.

Week 2

The first few days of the week I smelled really bad on both pits. I had to make sure I brought some perfume with me so the people next to me won't die of smelly. I don't think I've ever felt this insecure about BO since middle school... The later half of the week though all the BO suddenly disappeared. Completely gone! Just like that. I don't know what happened but it is definitely a welcome change.

Week 3

Still pretty scentless. I don't notice excess sweating like it said though. Towards the end of the week, I smelled pretty neutral, no excess sweating that is particularly noticeable. The only time I had some odour peeking through is if I had something particularly smelly to eat like onions or curry but then don't we all smell a bit funky after eating some of that. Really impressed so far!

Week 4

I am completely odourless! This is amazing. If you're willing to get past the first two horrendous weeks of utter stinkfest, you'll see that this is one of the few natural deodorants that actually work! I'm really happy with this and will definitely get some more.
